Six Years Later

I have a Blogger Account - imagine that!

Mea culpa it's been six years since my last post. I've been consorting with the devil, in the form of WordPress, for the last few years. It's been good. I've written over a thousand posts on the two main blogs I created and have received thousands and thousands of Likes, Comments and Follows. It's been quite a ride.

At the moment I'm in the second year of a Masters in Creative Writing with the OU and I'm on my way to becoming a World Famous Author. But until that happens, I'll carry on with the Day Job as a Software Developer.

Which reminds me - I need to get back to work. :)

Ciao to y'all,
Robert.

Americana Music Show

I just found this wonderful podcast  called the Americana Music Show and the music is special and the presenter is cool and there are interviews and did I mention that the music is real good? Anyways, that's what I'm listening to right now. :)

The Soloist

The Soloist is the kind of movie I want to watch more of.

Yesterday I watched a movie with the same actor: Robert Downey Jr. called Iron Man 2, and although Mr Downey was excellent in the role I found the plot and action to be so outside of the reality I want to build for myself that after the titles rolled I decided to be careful of the influences and ideas that I feed into this mind.

By contrast - The Soloist embodies values that I hold in esteem such as friendship and persistence and love and caring. I need so much more practice with these values. I would much rather be influenced by movies such as The Soloist than by the rock and roll violence of movies such as Iron Man 2.

Good Things Happen

During our adult years, try as we might to see ourselves as misfortunate so that we can get a little sympathy; sooner or later good things happen to us.

The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work

I've been reading this book called The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work. My wife brought it home and I picked it up. There's one chapter in there called 'Overcome Gridlock' which is about overcoming those really difficult things that we argue about that neither side seems to want to back down on and that have been a problem over a long period of time.

The book says that these arguments arise because each person feels that their 'dream' is under threat. These dreams are not the usual nocturnal type, but are more the things that people are looking for in life e.g. 'My dream is for my husband to love me, care for me and make everything alright like I'm a princess'. Get the idea?

Well, today I realised what mine is. My dream is to marry and spend the rest of my life with someone that accepts me for who I am. Now I'm not saying that this is entirely realistic, I have as many bad habits as the next person; but now I realise, from my side, what the basis of of those 'gridlocked' arguments is. Hopefully now we can make some progress.

Free mp3s For You and Me!

Everyone loves something free and I know you're no exception!
I went to see Resident Evil: Afterlife last night (rather disappointed by the way - the 3D effects didn't add much to the film and I found myself a tad bored at times - it was too much like a computer game in parts (and yes, before you say, I know it's based on a computer game - but this one was too much like one)), so this morning, on a whim I looked up Milla Jovovich (for 'tis her kicking ass in the movie) on the old interweb.

Turns out that she has a brilliant homepage at http://www.millaj.com/home.shtml and what's more it turns out that as well as being a beautiful model and talented actress, she is also a singer, and her stuff is absolutely lovely in a portishead/Massive Attack/Lamb/Morcheeba/Beth Orton/Goldfrapp/folksy kind of a way - and here's the best thing: there are 18 (yes, eighteen) free mp3s of her work on her website at http://www.millaj.com/music/index.shtml so get yourself over there and download to your heart's content.
Gotta be better than either nicking them or buying them!!

Where I Live

So, I've been reading (amongst other things) books by Bill Bryson who like does these travelogue type books describing the places he's been, but not in a typical travel book kind of style, more like in a twisted comedian kind of style.

He'll say things like he's always polite in restaurants just so that the waitress doesn't spit in his food. With that in mind I won't tell you exactly where I live just in case the druggies on the next estate get offended and spray paint offensive things on the garage or something. So, it's a nice little place we live in, and the druggie estate isn't so bad if you like girls that think that it's the epitome of fashion to dress like Britney Spears (on an off year) or guys in the style of Eminem if he was fond of doing wheelies on mountain bikes down the main road.

'Round here it's newer and a bit nicer; the houses have only been up about 11 years and our garage has only fallen down once (which the builders very kindly repaired - hurrah!). We finally have a neighbour who is capable of mowing their lawn, so that saves us having to mow 2, like what we did for the previous 10 years (has it really been that long?).

My darling wife doesn't like the manhole covers in the middle of the front garden path and has been nagging me to get someone to redo the path and disguise the manhole covers for the past few years but it just doesn't seem worth £1,100 to me! Anyways, even if we didn't get it done she'd find something else to nag about so at least holding out keeps the nagging predictable. If it was up to me the money'd be better spent.. umm, can't think of anything better; now there's a funny thing!

Perhaps it's time for bed.
